UBS economist George Tharanou says its possible Australia could be heading for a near term trade surplus
- He cites the rise in coal prices (will push export values higher in September and October)
- This will narrow the trade deficit sharply
- He quantifies the effect by saying with coal exports around $2.8 bn/month (equating to a near 10% cent share of total exports, the higher price "if sustained over coming months, could potentially be large enough to wipe out the overall trade deficit by itself"
