EU to bill every UK citizen €500 if May fails to pay Brexit divorce settlement

Reporters at Europe"s APR1 TV News station have reportedly seen a leaked document following a meeting between EU Council president Donald Tusk, and European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker. In it are plans that show that the EU is getting ready to bill every UK citizen €500 if Theresa May does not pay the UK"s exit bill. 

Under European law, claims can be sent out directly to the populations of member States if "that State"s government fails to settle any financial commitments to the EU". In the leaked document it was mentioned that this option had already been discussed in depth during the early Greek crisis talks when Greece threatened to default on its debts.

Under this claw-back rule, some 70m UK citizens would receive an invoice from the EU with a 90-day settlement period, after which the EU would seek to legally enforce payment via writs from the European Court of Justice, which could mean debt collectors being called in to collect payment or remove goods from homeowners.

Some 3m EU citizens living in the UK would be exempt, as would other nationalities but they would have to prove their ineligibility as the bills would be sent to every address in the UK.

With the UK"s Brexit divorce bill estimated to be some €60bn, this move would net the EU around €35bn. Juncker and Tusk reason that they will make the balance up from withholding various payments, rebates and settlements that would be due to the UK under the divorce deal. 

As you can imagine, people in the UK are up in arms about this news, and there is talk that around 2 million people will march on Parliament to protest next week.

I would like to say I"m shocked by this news but knowing what Europe is like after all these years, I"m not surprised in the slightest that they would pull a stunt like this. All through this Brexi process it"s been clear it"s all about the money for Europe. For decency reasons, I won"t print what I would do should such a demand drop through my letterbox ;-)
